You Were Made for God, to Follow God
He made everything out of nothing. We (mankind) have never made a single cell, yet we have 70 trillion of them. There is an old joke about a scientist who challenged God to build a human. The scientist said he had figured it out and could do a better job than God. So he sat down to “create,” and the scientist looked at God and said, “Hey, I need some dirt!” God said, “Make your own dirt; I did!” This exposes the pride and arrogance we often have toward God and His creation. We are called to steward and care for His creation, not try to be superior to it. His design is perfect.
Truth to Put in Your Heart
Nothing is too hard for the God who made everything. Do you have more faith in man or in God? Imagine what it would have been like to be there in the beginning when God created everything. My encouragement for you is to remember you are made by God.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. —GENESIS 1:26–27
This is a game changer. This should or could eliminate any fear, doubt, or worry for you if you can realize and believe how much God loves you and just how incredibly and divinely you are created. You matter. You were divinely created by the greatest creator, doctor, designer in all of history. You are a masterpiece, created in the likeness and image of the Master.
God Divinely Designed Us to Do the Work for Him—But It’s Our Choice
We are created and divinely called to do “work.” We are designed for relationship. First with God. Second with others.
Many studies on longevity have shown the importance of purpose (work) and relationship. Many retirees die quickly after retirement. Many times we resent work or complain about work, yet we are created by God to do work!
Do you look at your work as a divine calling? Created to work? Are you lonely? Do you have friends? Not social media “friends”—real people you can talk with, pray with, laugh with, cry with? It matters - more than you think! We want the hack, the shortcut, and often, we want “to be God.” The amazing thing is, he allows us to choose. Everyday we make choices that are good or evil.
- We decide if we are going to pray.
- We decide what to eat.
- We choose the words we speak.
- We choose our wake-up time.
- We decide to log into social media.
How are all these choices and decisions going? Are the drawing you closer to God or farther away?
You Can Grumble in the Desert or be Blessed for Obedience
The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” —EXODUS 16:3
Just imagine briefly that you had been freed from terrible slavery and you saw one of the greatest miracles of the parting of the Red Sea, yet a few days later you are actually asking to be a slave again.
Old habits die hard. Make no mistake, changing your lifestyle and habits can be very difficult. You will need the Holy Spirit to do it. There will be days you will just want to go back to the slavery of your old life. But God has promised that He is with you. He will provide a way. Lean on Him. Pray to Him. Be honest. Show your struggle—He already knows anyway.
Following the ways of God is not restrictive and punitive. It’s freedom and blessing. All He wants is what is best for us and He made incredible promises to us about the blessing of living in alignment with God’s ways.
Re-frame God’s ways. If you wanted to be a great athlete and I told you the greatest coach ever was going to mentor you, how would you feel? I assure you that you would be excited (maybe even a little intimidated too). But what an opportunity! Sure there will be hard days, but lots of blessings. This is God and the Holy Spirit in our lives. What an amazing gift and opportunity.
All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God. —Deuteronomy 28:2
